German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday not to allow young men to leave the country, reports Agerpres, citing AFP.

Merz’s request targets a recent decision by Kiev to authorize Ukrainians aged between 18 and 22 to leave the country.

The effect was that a new wave of Ukrainian refugees arrived in Germany, adds the cited source.

Merz and Zelensky had a phone conversation in the context of the corruption scandal shaking Ukraine.

Timur Mindich, a close associate and business partner of Zelensky, fled the country after it was revealed that he had sponsored a money laundering scheme worth 100 million dollars.

The scandal has spread to the Kiev government, and the president has asked for the resignations of two ministers.
