The Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, has stated that he approved the memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington, despite initially opposing the agreement. In a message published by the Iranian state press and quoted by the BBC, he affirmed that he gave his consent after receiving guarantees from President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the protection of Iran’s interests and those of the “Axis of Resistance”.
The statement comes shortly after US Vice President JD Vance announced that the official 60-day period in which the United States and Iran will negotiate a final agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, the lifting of sanctions, and the future of relations between the two countries has begun.
In his message, Khamenei emphasized that he has not changed his fundamental stance on negotiations, but he accepted the initiative after the Iranian president took responsibility for defending national interests and promised that Iran will not accept any excessive demands from Washington.
