On April 30, the organization Reporters Without Borders published the 2026 World Press Freedom Index. The Republic of Moldova ranked 31st, climbing four positions in the ranking, compared to the 2025 list.
The organization categorizes the situation regarding media freedom in the Republic of Moldova as “satisfactory”, reports newsmaker.md. President Maia Sandu reacted to the news and conveyed that the indicator is the best among the states applying for membership in the European Union.
“Moldova climbs to 31st place (+4) in the 2026 Press Freedom Index of Reporters Without Borders — the best score among EU candidate countries and the only Eastern European country with a “satisfactory” status. There is still much work to be done, but we are on the right track“, Maia Sandu shared on social networks.
The ranking is led by Norway, followed by the Netherlands, Estonia, Denmark, and Sweden. Romania and Ukraine – neighboring states of the Republic of Moldova – have occupied the 49th and 55th places respectively.
