The Mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin, has announced a 15% reduction in the number of civilian public officials within the Moscow City Hall and its subordinate institutions performing administrative functions.

The decision was made following an analysis of the execution of the Russian capital’s budget for the period of January–February, discussed within the presidium of the Moscow government.

According to Sobyanin, the cuts are necessary due to the slowdown in the growth of budget revenues: in the first two months of the year, they only increased by 2%, compared to the 6.5% that had been planned. The authorities believe that it is necessary to optimize expenses in order to maintain the city’s financial stability.

At the same time, the Moscow government intends to reduce the investment program for the year 2026 by 10%. According to the mayor, these measures should allow the maintenance of social obligations and the continuation of funding for the military and their families, as well as projects carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of Defense.
