A multinational NATO tactical group aimed at deterring Russia from attacking countries on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance will be deployed in Finland this summer, according to an announcement made on Wednesday by Sweden, the framework nation of this force, reports Agerpres.
“We hope to start this summer”, with the first elements to be deployed “at the beginning of the summer”, stated the head of Swedish joint operations, Vice Admiral Ewa Skoog Haslum, to a few journalists.
NATO Battalions in 8 Countries on the Eastern Flank
NATO deploys multinational battalions in eight countries on the eastern flank (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria).
Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia and joined NATO in 2023, has not had such forces on its territory until now, although the principle was established as early as 2024.
Sweden, which joined NATO in 2024, will deploy within this group a battalion consisting of several hundred soldiers that could be expanded to brigade level (almost 5,000 soldiers) in case of a crisis.
