The peace talks mediated by the United States to end Russia’s war against Ukraine are currently suspended, but Moscow hopes the process will be resumed, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday.

The statement marks a change in tone in Moscow’s rhetoric, after the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, stated on April 18 that negotiations with Ukraine are not a priority for Russia, notes Kyiv Independent.

“We expect that (the peace process) will eventually be resumed. And we expect our American counterparts to continue their mediation efforts and promote peace in this regard”, said Peskov.

The latest trilateral discussions between Ukraine, Russia, and the USA took place in February. A meeting, initially planned for the end of February and then postponed to the beginning of March, was cancelled just before the US-Israel strikes on Iran shifted Washington’s attention to the Middle East.

President Volodimir Zelenski has repeatedly urged both Washington and Moscow to resume negotiations, stating that he does not believe the peace process has reached a deadlock.

“We are much stronger today than we have been in the last six months”, Zelenski declared in March.

The Ukrainian president also said on May 8 that officials in Kiev expect envoys of the American president Donald Trump to visit the country at the end of spring or the beginning of summer, in an attempt to restart the discussions.
