Russian authorities intend to introduce strict control over foreign scientific publications related to genetic research. This is evident from a draft resolution prepared by the Federal Medical-Biological Agency of Russia, which details the previously adopted law on state control over the transfer abroad of genetic data of Russian citizens.

According to the document, quoted by Kommersant, any publication of the results of population studies in which at least three people participated will need to be approved by a new interdepartmental commission.

The committee will include representatives from the FSB, SVR, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Science, as well as other state institutions and academic centers.

If “threats to national security” are identified, the commission may prohibit the transmission or publication of the research abroad, or may request the modification of the text.

According to oncologist Polina Șilo, the new rules will not only affect strictly specialized genetic research, but also a large part of medical work, including oncology, where molecular diagnosis is used.
