NATO announced on Wednesday the launch of a new mission to strengthen security in the Arctic, in a tense geopolitical context, marked by the increasing interest of major powers in the region and by the statements of the American President Donald Trump regarding Greenland. The initiative sparked strong reactions in Moscow, where Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned of possible “countermeasures”, including military ones.

The new NATO mission, called “Arctic Sentry“, aims to strengthen the Alliance’s position in the Arctic region and maintain stability in an area considered strategic. According to an official statement, this reflects NATO’s commitment to adapt its security posture in the far north.

“Maintaining stability in one of the most strategically important regions” is a priority for the Alliance, stated the supreme commander of NATO, American General Alexus Grynkewich, in an official statement.

Russia’s reaction was not long in coming. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that Moscow will respond if Western countries strengthen their military presence in Greenland.

“Of course, in the case of the militarization of Greenland, of the creation there of military capabilities directed against Russia, we will take appropriate countermeasures, including of a military-technical nature”, Lavrov declared on Wednesday, in front of the Russian parliament.

In recent months, several European countries have deployed limited military contingents in Greenland, an autonomous territory under the authority of Denmark. The area has come into the international spotlight after American President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed his desire for the United States to take control of the Arctic territory, citing security reasons related to Russia’s activity and China’s increasing interest in the region.
