The Republic of Moldova is on the “front line” of regional security challenges – from cyber attacks and airspace violations, to massive disinformation. The warning was issued by the president of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA), Marcos Perestrello.

The statement was conveyed during the opening of the 109th Rose-Roth Seminar, organized in Chisinau, reports Moldova 1. Participants at the event highlighted the intensification of threats to the Republic of Moldova and the need to strengthen defense capabilities and national resilience.

“It is essential that we gather here, this week, as the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO, because the Republic of Moldova is at the forefront of many of the security challenges that affect both the member states of the Alliance and its partners. From airspace violations by drones, hybrid warfare and cyber attacks, to disinformation campaigns and attacks on critical infrastructure, our security environment continues to deteriorate”, declared Marcos Perestrello.

The official emphasized that Russia’s war against Ukraine has a direct impact on the security of the Republic of Moldova.

Another topic addressed by Perestrello was energy security. He mentioned that the Republic of Moldova was particularly vulnerable to the use of energy as a pressure tool, including due to Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

“The Republic of Moldova has been particularly vulnerable to the transformation of energy into a weapon, facing disruptions in supply, sharp increases in energy costs, and power outages caused by Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Despite unprecedented attempts at foreign interference, the recent elections in the Republic of Moldova have demonstrated the resilience of democratic institutions, civil society, and international partnerships in protecting electoral integrity,” emphasized Perestrello.

In this context, the NATO PA President advocated for strengthening cooperation between the Alliance and partner states, including the Republic of Moldova, in the face of manipulation, interference, and foreign informational influence.
