NATO will strengthen the defense of its eastern flank with a new structure, which would facilitate the rapid deployment of forces in Latvia and Estonia in the event of a war with Russia, two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters.
Currently, NATO forces from the three Baltic countries and those from northern Poland are under the command of a single multinational headquarters, located in the Polish city of Szczecin. The anticipated change reflects the strategic importance of the Baltic countries.
The allocation of a second army corps to the region will allow NATO to bring significant military forces in a short time, explained a military official.
When fully operational, a corps usually has under its command three divisions, or between 40,000 and 60,000 soldiers.
