The Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, had a phone conversation with the NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, about the security situation in Europe, particularly concerning worries about potential aggressive actions from Iran, according to the Bulgarian government.
The NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, reaffirmed on Thursday to the Bulgarian Prime Minister, Rumen Radev, that a potential attack from Iran on the Balkan country would be interpreted as an attack against the entire North Atlantic Alliance, as established by the principle of collective defense provided in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, according to EFE.
Mark Rutte personally confirmed full NATO support, as well as the readiness of the Alliance’s regional defense forces and means to respond and neutralize any threat to NATO member states, the Sofia Government announced in a statement.
“Any attack on a NATO member state will be unequivocally considered an attack on the Alliance, with all actions ensuing from the North Atlantic Treaty”, the statement further notes.
The discussion comes after the international press reported on possible plans of Iran to target American military facilities in Europe. An article published by the Financial Times talks about the fact that Tehran would have considered such a move in case President Donald Trump escalates the war.
