The coalition government of Austria announced on Monday that it intends to extend the military service period from six to nine months. Thus, the state wants to adapt to the security situation, influenced by the war in Ukraine.
For decades, the armed forces of Austria, a neutral country, have largely played a role in civil protection. The military has assisted emergency services during natural disasters, such as floods and forest fires, and has also conducted border patrols to intercept illegal immigrants.
“Security conditions have fundamentally changed in recent years, months, and weeks. The dream of a lasting peace in Europe has been shattered with Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine,” declared Chancellor Christian Stocker at a press conference held at a military barracks outside the city of Salzburg.
The official also referred to hybrid threats, as well as to cyber dangers, according to news.ro. In his opinion, such circumstances would require taking responsibility for defense and population protection.
Austria is surrounded by eight countries, two of which are not part of NATO. Currently, 18-year-olds in Austria have the choice between military service and a nine-month civil alternative, during which they usually work at institutions such as ambulance services or nursing homes.
The period of civil service could be extended, and the authorities want to also create a reserve army, which would undergo refresher exercises every 10 years. They will benefit from days off and remunerations of 1000 euros per month.
