Nikolai Varpahovici, a major-general in the Russian army and the mastermind behind the attack on the Ohmatdit children’s hospital in Kiev, was the target of an assassination attempt in Moscow on Wednesday morning, reports Euronews. The Russian military official was shot twice at close range by an attacker on a motorcycle. The attack took place near the Engels air base. The Russian general had been charged in absentia in Ukraine as a result of the war crime committed. This is the latest episode in a series of attacks against Russian officers on the territory of the aggressor state.
An unidentified attacker, on a motorcycle, fired twice at the officer as he was leaving a store in the village of Probujdenie, Engels district, then fled. One bullet hit him in the face, and the other in the abdomen.
He was transported to the hospital in a serious condition, and subsequently airlifted to Moscow for further treatment.
Russian military channels on Telegram have identified the injured man as Major General Nikolai Varpahovici, commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division of the Russian Long-Range Aviation. The Russian authorities have not officially confirmed his identity.
The city of Engels, located approximately 850 kilometers from Moscow, hosts the Engels-2 air base, one of the most important bases of Russian strategic aviation.
