An acute crisis of “Carboplatin” – an essential chemotherapy drug, has erupted in Russia. The drug is used in the treatment of lung, ovarian, bladder, and breast cancer, as well as in veterinary medicine for animals with malignant tumors. According to the publication “Ostorojno, Novosti”, the drug has become almost impossible to find in pharmacies.

A resident of Penza reported to the press that for two weeks she had been unsuccessfully calling numerous pharmacies in the region. The few boxes identified in Ekaterinburg and Vladivostok were sold at prices between 18,000 and 30,000 rubles (approximately 185–310 euros), which is 5–10 times more expensive than the average market price (2,000–4,000 rubles, or 20–40 euros), according to pharmaceutical platforms. The woman is convinced that speculators are profiting from the shortage: “the drug disappears immediately and reappears being resold at exaggerated prices”.

Several oncologists have confirmed that the supply problems with “Carboplatin” in Russia began about six months ago. Due to lack of alternatives, patients are forced to try to buy the treatment from CIS countries or from Turkey.
