Hackers breached Russia’s and Ukraine’s alert systems, sending notifications to the public in the name of the authorities warning of supposed nuclear threats.
Russia’s emergency services said it was a cyberattack, according to Meduza.
People in Ukraine were warned of a radiation hazard and a nuclear alert following an attack with Oreshnik missiles. The armed forces attributed the message to hackers and said that unauthorized individuals had gained access to the systems.
The systems remained fully operational, and the hackers confined their activity to sending notifications to citizens, officials in both countries reported. In Ukraine, notifications were temporarily disabled following the attack.
