Hungary will not support the European Commission’s proposal to impose restrictions on Ukrainian men fit for incorporation into the Kiev army, announced Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar on Tuesday, reports Kyiv Independent.
Magyar added that, even in the case where the decision will be, nevertheless, adopted at the EU level, this will not prevent Budapest from accepting ethnic Hungarians who flee to Hungary, to escape incorporation.
At present, around 70,000 – 80,000 ethnic Hungarians live in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. Hundreds of ethnic Hungarians are already fighting in the Ukrainian army, at this moment.
Peter Magyar added that another 6-7 European states oppose the European Commission’s proposal to restrict the access of Ukrainian men fit for conscription into the EU.
On June 26, the European Commission proposed to supplement social protection measures for the 4.4 million Ukrainian refugees currently in the community space, concurrently with the prohibition of access to the EU for men of an age that can be recruited into the Ukrainian army.
