The new government of Peter Magyar might abandon cooperation with the Russians from Rosatom at the only nuclear power plant in Hungary, writes The Moscow Times.

The Hungarian authorities will review the financing and implementation of the expansion works at the Paks nuclear power plant, stated Istvan Kapitany, who is expected to take over the role of Minister of Economy and Energy.

Under the former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the Budapest government awarded in 2014, without a tender, to Rosatom, a contract for the construction of two new energy units at the nuclear-electric complex.

The Russian company only started construction work in February 2026.

“We need a transparent nuclear strategy. We must review the funding and costs of Paks II (the name of the expansion project, ed.) and its implementation terms.”

“These are secret contracts that we have not yet reviewed and need to study,” Kapitany stated at a parliamentary hearing.

Peter Magyar, in turn, previously spoke about his intention to review all agreements related to the Paks nuclear power plant project, which he called overvalued.

A potential termination of the contract with the Russians could mean a loss of nearly 15 billion dollars for Rosatom.
