The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has asked the Federal Security Service (FSB) and other security structures to “increase the level of protection” for officials of the Ministry of Defense, employees of enterprises in the military-industrial complex, as well as representatives of state and local authorities.

The statement was made during an FSB board meeting. Putin stated that the measures target all individuals “constantly threatened by the regime in Kiev”. He called for an intensification of protection activities in border regions and on Ukrainian territories under Russian control. He also called for a strengthening of the fight against terrorism.

    Context: the explosion in Moscow

The statements came after the explosion of a traffic police car in the Savelovsky Station area of Moscow, which occurred on the night of February 23. As a result of the incident, a police officer died.

Investigators reported that the suspect, a 22-year-old man from Udmurtia, would have “self-detonated”. Putin argued that it was a case of “online recruitment” and that the explosive device had been delivered to him, being detonated remotely later. The Russian leader stated that the suspect “probably didn’t even know exactly what he was doing” and emphasized the need for additional measures from the FSB.
