Russian authorities are once again resorting to religious symbols in the hope that they will bring luck to the soldiers fighting in Ukraine, at a time when the pace of the Russian troops’ advance has significantly slowed down, writes The Moscow Times. In the latest such attempt, the tomb of Dmitri Donskoi, a prince canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, has been opened in Russia, and some of his relics might be sent to the front. Vladimir Putin went to the Archangel Cathedral in the Kremlin to see them and called the discovery “astonishing” and “miraculous”.

On Thursday, Vladimir Putin attended a service at the Archangel Cathedral in the Kremlin, where, two days earlier, the Russian Orthodox Church had announced the “discovery” of the relics of Dmitri Donskoi, a Russian prince who in 1380 defeated Mamai’s army in the Battle of Kulikovo Field.

In the images published by the Kremlin and the state agency TASS, Putin appears with a candle in hand, crossing himself during a service for the “victorious army”, the “Russian country and president”. Subsequently, he inspects two open graves, in which remnants covered with cloth can be seen.
