Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the G20 leaders’ summit in the United Kingdom, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The summit is scheduled to take place in Manchester in 2027. The G20 brings together the world’s largest advanced and emerging economies.
According to Reuters, Burnham was asked whether Putin would be invited to Manchester, given the sanctions London had imposed on him over the war in Ukraine. The British prime minister replied, “No.”
The Russian leader cannot be formally excluded, as his country is a member of the G20. However, he “will not attend because of the sanctions in place,” The Economist previously reported.
Burnham’s office provided no further details on the sanctions against Putin, which the UK began imposing in 2022.
Putin has been invited to the US for talks with Trump.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in September that Washington had invited Putin to a G20 meeting to be held in Miami in December. According to Rubio, the event would give the Russian leader an opportunity to engage with President Donald Trump and other world leaders.
