The scientific coordinator of Vladimir Putin’s doctoral thesis, the rector of the Mining University of Saint Petersburg, Vladimir Litvinenko, intends to test a controversial theory about the origin of oil, writes the publication Der Spiegel, taken over by The Moscow Times. According to this theory, some hydrocarbons may have an inorganic origin and are “formed” in the depths of the Earth. Thus, oil fields may replenish their hydrocarbon reserves over time.

This consists in the fact that some hydrocarbons can have an inorganic origin and can form in the depths of the Earth. Depleted oil fields, which can regenerate over time, are like the dream of any oil worker.

Most experts in the field of petroleum geology believe that oil and natural gas deposits were formed millions of years ago from organic matter (“organic theory”).

“There is a scientific consensus in Western countries: oil and natural gas deposits have formed as a result of the transformation of organic material (the decomposition of marine organisms – ed.),” said Catherine Brede, head of the petroleum geology research group at Clausthal University of Technology.

According to Brede, Litvinenko is now trying to test a hypothesis mainly held in Russia for decades – the theory of the inorganic origin of oil.
