A Russian military helicopter briefly entered Polish airspace, in an incident considered by the authorities in Warsaw as a new test of NATO’s defense capabilities.
A Mi-8 type aircraft flew over Polish territory for 42 seconds, at an altitude of approximately 300 meters, an incident that triggered an immediate response from the alliance, with several fighter jets being urgently dispatched on a mission.
According to available information, the Russian helicopter would have taken off from the Kaliningrad region, near the Polish city of Braniewo.
The Polish authorities consider the incident a deliberate violation of airspace, intended to test the reaction of NATO’s defense systems.
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces conveyed in a statement: “The flight of the aircraft was tracked by the radar systems of the Polish Armed Forces. Fighter planes were dispatched, and the ground forces and resources remained on alert.”
“The nature of the incident indicates that Russia is once again testing our air defense response capability. The Polish anti-aircraft defense crews are constantly monitoring, remaining in a state of continuous readiness, to ensure the security of the Polish airspace,\” the statement further reads.
In September last year, Poland shot down four of the 19 Russian drones that violated its airspace. In September 2026, a drone reached the NATO missile shield at Redzikowo, and the soldiers guarding the base called the emergency number 112. The device was not shot down, and the ministry did not specify whether an attempt was made to intercept it, reopening questions about the efficiency of Polish defense systems against drones.
