Moscow is changing its attack technology and sending to the Ukrainian front drone models that are much faster than those used so far, according to Business Insider.

“The Russians are reducing the number of conventional drones they use, while effectively increasing the number of jet-powered drones,” stated the official spokesperson of the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk, in an interview for Ukrinform on Monday.

“In other words, the Russians are now primarily betting on these,” he said, noting that numerous components of the defense forces are involved in their combat. “The air forces are constantly operating in the south, and this can even be observed from the sea,” added Pletenchuk.

Many of the Kremlin’s “Shahed” drones, which follow the design of Iranian attack drones but are manufactured in Russia, are launched from its southern territories and from occupied Crimea.

Their typical flight path to Ukraine passes over the Black Sea, where the Ukrainian navy defends the region and its ports.

    The new 600 km/h drones

Jet-propelled drones fly much faster than the “Geran-1” and “Geran-2” models, which are the Russian versions of the “Shahed” propeller drones. The jet-propelled variants, named “Geran-3” and “Geran-4”, have been used in attacks since last summer.

The more advanced model “Geran-5”, a version of the Iranian drone “Karrar” that flies at speeds of approximately 600 kilometers per hour, made its combat debut in January.

In June, General Oleksandr Sîrski, then commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, stated that Russia wants half of its long-range attack waves to be formed from jet propulsion systems.
