Romania is the second most exposed country in the European Union to fake news, disinformation, and false news. The data was presented in the Eurobarometer.
According to statistics, in 2025, 36% of Europeans say they have been exposed “often” or “very often” to disinformation. In 2022 the rate was 28%.
The report indicates that Eastern and Southern European countries are generally more affected. In Hungary (57%), Romania (55%), and Spain (52%), over half of the respondents claim they frequently encounter false news, reports NordNews. The rate exceeds 40% also in Bulgaria (48%), Luxembourg (45%), Malta (45%), Greece (43%), Cyprus (42%), and Ireland (42%).
At the opposite end are the Northern and Western countries, where reported exposure is lower. Finland and Germany each have 26%, while the Czech Republic (29%), Sweden (30%), Lithuania (30%), and France (30%) are at similar levels.
The data also reveals that only 62% of Europeans believe they can recognize disinformation when they encounter it. Only 12% declare themselves “very confident”, while about a third of respondents say they are not sure they can identify false news.
