An employee of the Romanian Embassy in Moscow has been declared persona non grata, as announced by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the Ministry, this would be a decision of a reciprocal nature.

According to a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest confirms that today, August 27, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation has announced the decision to declare a member of the staff of the Romanian Embassy in Moscow as persona non grata.

This measure by the Russian side is of a reciprocal nature, occurring in response to the decision adopted by the Romanian authorities on July 27, 2026, regarding the declaration as unacceptable of a member of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bucharest, reports dw.com.

We remind you that the aforementioned decision of the Romanian authorities was a response to the repeated violations of Romania’s airspace during the period of July 24-26, 2026, a time frame in which the Romanian Army shot down three Russian drones that had entered unauthorized into national territory.

Previously, the Moscow Foreign Ministry, quoted by the Russian press, had announced the summoning of the Romanian Charge d’Affaires in Russia, Liliana Burda, to whom was handed “a note from the ministry declaring a staff member of the Romanian embassy in Moscow persona non grata”.

After the downing of the three Russian drones, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had also announced the summoning of Romania’s envoy to Moscow for consultations. Russia, in turn, specified at that time that it would not recall its ambassador from Romania for consultations, but that it would respond to the expulsion of the Russian diplomat by the authorities in Bucharest.
