The most recent report from Anthropic company on the abusive use of its artificial intelligence (AI) model revealed that a group of hackers with ties to Russia used “Claude” to automate attacks on over 20 targets, including the Defense Ministries of Ukraine and drone providers, while other operators have carried out pro-Kremlin disinformation campaigns in Africa and the Republic of Moldova, reports Euronews.
Russia has used the AI model Claude from Anthropic company to accelerate cyber espionage operations against Ukrainian and European governmental targets, to conduct disinformation campaigns in Africa and Moldova, and to develop targeting software for autonomous swarms of kamikaze drones, the American company stated in a report published this month.
Anthropic stated that it has blocked all malicious activities identified in the report, used the conclusions to strengthen its security systems, and shared the information with governmental bodies and industry partners.
In a significant case, a group of hackers named GTG-20006 used “Claude” to automate operations against over 20 targets, including ministries, defense and intelligence agencies, embassies, research centers, and companies in the defense industry, Anthropic stated.
Ukraine was the main target
Ukraine was the main target, and among those attacked were also technology providers for military drones, as well as their supply chains. The group also targeted government departments in the Middle East and Asia with ties to maritime activities. Anthropic stated that GTG-20006 has links with Midnight Blizzard, a group of hackers that Western intelligence services attribute to the Russian foreign intelligence service SVR.
