The Russian government is considering the possibility of introducing an age limit for the use of mobile phones by children, arguing that it is “not normal for a child to be given a smartphone or tablet from the age of three in order not to disturb their parents”.

According to the Russian Minister of Education, Sergei Kravtsov, this negatively affects the child’s psychological development and can subsequently lead to deviant behavior, writes the Moscow Times.

“Therefore, there needs to be a certain age at which a child can use a mobile phone,” said Kravtsov, emphasizing that the issue is “complex”.

The Minister adds that the problem lies in children’s excessive involvement in the virtual world, which hinders the development of essential psychological functions.

The Ministry of Education continues to analyze possible restrictions for younger age groups, however, according to Kravtsov, “there is not yet a final decision”.

Russia previously banned the use of mobile phones during class hours. The corresponding law, signed by Vladimir Putin in December 2023, prohibits the use of gadgets during lessons, except in emergency situations involving a threat to life or health.
