The banking system in Russia faced the strongest increase in overdue mortgage debts in decades in 2025.

According to RBC, which cites data from the “Scoring Bureau”, by the end of the year, Russian citizens had accumulated arrears in the payment of mortgage loans and interest amounting to 276 billion rubles (approx. 2.7 billion euros). Over the year, the amount of arrears increased by 115.2 billion rubles — an increase of 76.6%.

RBC emphasizes that such an increase — over 50% per year — was only recorded in the mid-2000s, when the mortgage credit system was just beginning in Russia. However, now the explosive pace of accumulation of problematic debts continues for the second consecutive year. In 2024, the volume of overdue loans had already increased by 50%, from 100 to 150.4 billion rubles. In total, between 2023 and 2025, arrears on mortgage loans increased by 180%.
