The European Union is considering imposing stricter restrictions on Russian diplomats, amidst escalating hybrid threats and suspicions of Moscow’s involvement in several incidents on European territory.
Brussels is examining new measures to control the movements of diplomats, while member states are trying to coordinate their response to what they consider to be actions of interference and sabotage supported by Russia, announces Euronews.
The movements and activities of Russian diplomats have come under new scrutiny in Brussels, in the context where the European Union is facing a series of hybrid attacks, some of which have been directly attributed to Moscow.
The incidents have fueled concerns about the collective security of the Union and have prompted member states to consider the possibility of stricter restrictions and controls. The subject could become the next step within the community block’s sanctions regime, according to high-ranking diplomats familiar with the discussions.
At the same time, Brussels is trying to overcome the controversial incident related to the expulsion, last month, of two prominent Russian oligarchs, a situation that has tested the unity of the member states. EU countries are now looking for ways to strengthen their common position and respond more firmly to the interferences attributed to the Kremlin.
Among the options considered are the introduction of stricter restrictions and controls on Russian diplomats, in an attempt to combat what European officials consider to be state-sponsored hybrid warfare and sabotage actions.
