The Prosecutor’s Office should intensify its activity regarding the confiscation of Russian citizens’ property in criminal cases, stated General Prosecutor Alexandr Guțan during a meeting of the institution.
Although, during the period 2020-2024, the number of people convicted with property confiscation increased by over 800%, Guțan believes that this progress is insufficient. According to him, the assessment of the suspects’ and defendants’ property situation is done formally, in court proceedings there is a lack of an “offensive” approach, and only a third of the asset search orders for confiscation are successfully completed.
“The confiscation of criminally obtained assets is one of the key tools for weakening the economic base of crime,” Guțan emphasized. He asked prosecutors to more actively search for illegal assets, “including from third parties – former spouses, relatives or other close persons” – and to ensure the effective blocking and confiscation of these in favor of the state.
