Mobile internet was abruptly interrupted in several major cities in Russia, including Moscow and Saint Petersburg, prompting thousands of complaints from users.

Residents of Saint Petersburg faced massive interruptions of mobile internet on the morning of Monday, March 9, a phenomenon that had been previously reported in Moscow.

According to data from the monitoring platform Downdetector, the problems began around 6:00 on March 9, and in a short time, almost 1,500 complaints were registered from users.

Many residents reported on social networks that messaging services are not working, and numerous websites such as Telegram and applications, including banking ones, cannot be accessed. In some cases, internet access remained possible only for certain services included on so-called “white lists,” notes 1ru.

The interruptions occurred at the same time as an announcement made by the governor of the Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, who warned that there is a danger related to possible drone attacks and that there could be a decrease in mobile internet speed in the region.

According to the official, in this context, additional radio-technical security measures were activated, which could have affected the stability of civilian communication equipment.

Data from monitoring network activity shows that the greatest difficulties occurred in services sensitive to delays and data loss, such as the Telegram messaging application, mobile banking applications, and other programs that require a constant connection to servers.
