The residents of Moscow, where mobile phone service and the internet have been intermittent for several days, have become increasingly interested in other means of communication, including radio systems and pagers. MP3 players are also becoming more sought after.

Against this backdrop, it has been proposed in the State Duma that internet payphones appear on the streets of Russia’s major cities, reports Meduza. The proposal was put forward by deputy Igor Antropenko, a member of the “United Russia” party, controlled by Vladimir Putin.

Antropenko believes that this way citizens will be able to stay connected to the internet network, but security will also improve. According to the deputy, the measure would be an urgent one.

In central Moscow, interruptions in mobile internet and communications have been detected in the past week. Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov explained that the restrictions are being introduced for security reasons and will remain in effect “as long as necessary”.
