Social media platforms are Russia’s “silent ally” in the “digital war” and do nothing to combat disinformation, declared on Wednesday the Polish Minister of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, threatening companies with fines if they ignore the authorities’ requests, according to Reuters.
Poland and other Western countries have repeatedly accused Russia of spreading disinformation to provoke divisions and destabilize Western societies. Moscow rejects the accusations and maintains that Western leaders deliberately exaggerate the Russian threat to serve their own political interests.
The data from the National Research Institute NASK of Poland shows that platforms have taken action in less than a quarter of the over 65,000 reports regarding fake accounts and misinformation submitted in the first half of the year 2026.
Discord, Google, Meta, X, Telegram, and TikTok did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment on the situation.
“A digital war with Russia is underway, and within it there is a front of disinformation. On this front, social media platforms are a silent ally of Russian bots and the GRU, the Kremlin’s military intelligence service,” Gawkowski declared.
“Social media platforms do nothing about this,” he added, during a press conference.
According to NASK data, the platforms have deleted 7% of the reported fake accounts and disinformation cases and have applied moderation measures in over 17% of cases.
“The data indicates not just a failure, but also a deliberate action on the part of the platforms, which profit from misinformation, use it and treat it as a source of income”, stated the Polish minister.
Gawkowski also said that he asked the platforms to establish efficient content moderation teams, fluent in Polish, who maintain a direct and real-time connection with the institutions that report such materials.
