Vladimir Putin announced that Russia intends to commission the intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, by the end of this year. Moreover, recent tests of the system have been successfully completed.

The announcement was made during a video conference, where the commander of the Strategic Missile Forces, Sergei Karakaev, informed the Kremlin leader that recent tests of the system have been successfully completed.

Russia says it successfully tested the new nuclear-capable “Sarmat” missile and plans to place it on combat duty by the end of the year.

According to the Russian official, the first regiment equipped with this missile will enter operational service by the end of 2026 in the Krasnoyarsk region, reports Bloomberg.

Vladimir Putin first presented the Sarmat missile in March 2018, in a speech where he promoted a series of new strategic weapons that he claimed could make the United States’ missile defense systems “inefficient”.

At that moment, the Russian leader described Sarmat as a “unique weapon,” and during the video presentation broadcasted then, warheads were illustrated heading towards a map of southern Florida in the United States.
