Recent satellite images show the aftermath of a drone attack by Ukraine targeting a Russian submarine anchored at a Black Sea naval base.
The new images, captured Tuesday by the American spatial intelligence firm Vantor and obtained by Business Insider, show damage to a section of a quay in the port of Novorossiisk, near a Kilo-class submarine.
Ukraine’s internal security agency (SBU) announced on Monday that it had used underwater drones against a Russian submarine, in an attack that has never been carried out before. Kiev published video images of the operation, which caused a powerful explosion in the port, and stated that it had damaged and put the vessel out of service.
Russian state media, quoting the Black Sea Fleet, stated on Monday that the attack did not manage to damage any submarine.
The satellite images do not reveal any visible damage to the submarine in question; this does not mean that there might not be some in the submerged portion; from this point of view, the images are not clear and it is difficult to determine the success of the operation.
Russian Kilo-class submarines — diesel-electric vessels in service since the 1980s — are used to carry out Kalibr cruise missile attacks against Ukraine, which makes them an important target for Kiev.
