The US delegation left a meeting of the UN Security Council in protest against France’s comments, reports BBC.
The incident occurred on Monday and came after French representatives compared Washington’s vote to that of authoritarian states, on the occasion of Volker Turk’s mandate for the position of High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The diplomatic dispute was triggered as early as last week.
Then, the United States joined North Korea and Russia in voting against the extension of Turk’s mandate in the mentioned position.
After the vote that took place on Friday, France’s mission to the UN criticized the United States and compared them to North Korea and Russia.
“The USA used to be a beacon of human rights. It is no longer,” says a message posted on X by the French diplomatic representation.
In response, the US ambassador, Mike Waltz, accused France of voting for a human rights official who “lectured” democratic countries while “drawing closer to the world’s greatest oppressors.”
