The Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Metropolitan Court of Budapest has interrogated the former police lieutenant general János Hajdu, former director general of the Counterterrorism Center (TEK). He is suspected of having illegally detained seven Ukrainian citizens in March 2026.

According to a statement issued by the Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office, on March 4, 2026, János Hajdu held a briefing in front of the command officers involved in the operation.

At the request of the National Fiscal and Customs Administration (NAV), he ordered the interception of vehicles transporting dollar and euro banknotes, as well as gold bars for investment, from Austria to Ukraine, via Hungary. He also ordered the detention of Ukrainian citizens on suspicion of committing a crime.

The next day, on March 5, at 13:00, the special TEK troops blocked the two Ukrainian vehicles transporting valuables in the Alacska service area on the M0 highway.

The seven Ukrainian citizens were forcibly removed from their vehicles, laid on the ground, and handcuffed with their hands behind their backs, having inverted hoods pulled over their heads to cover their eyes. The operation was directly coordinated on the spot by János Hajdu, writes index.hu.
