The leader of the opposition in Hungary, Peter Magyar, accuses Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of having invited agents of the Russian secret services to Budapest to influence the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12. The statements were made public by the leader of the Tisza party and were reported by The Moscow Times.

Magyar, 44 years old and considered the favorite in polls for the position of Prime Minister, claims that agents of Russia’s secret military service, the GRU, are already in the Hungarian capital. In a message posted on Facebook, the opposition leader states that the Russian agents would have the mission of influencing the election outcome.

“Since János Kádár, Viktor Orbán is the first (state leader from Hungary – ed.) to invite the Russians to our country. We demand the immediate cessation of external interference in the Hungarian elections! According to information from several sources, agents of the Russian secret military service (GRU) have arrived in Budapest a few weeks ago, with the purpose and mission of influencing the outcome of the Hungarian elections. They did the same thing in Moldova.”

Magyar argues that the situation is unprecedented and asks the Prime Minister to immediately stop this action and expel the Russian agents who are in the country under diplomatic cover.

“It is completely unprecedented for a government on the verge of collapse to want to influence the Hungarian elections through foreign interference in its own benefit. I ask Viktor Orbán to immediately stop the action and expel the Russian secret agents who have arrived here, in Hungary, under diplomatic cover.”

The opposition leader also stated that Hungary must remain a reliable partner for its Western allies.
