An improvised explosive device was detonated on Tuesday, September 1, at a transformer of a thermal power plant in Germany. The explosion damaged several electrical lines and caused a brief interruption in the power supply.
According to DW, the devices were discovered at an electric station in Turnow-Preilack, southeast of Berlin, after a possible fault was detected on an electric line around 8:00.
The police have secured the evidence, and bomb disposal specialists have been dispatched to the scene.
No casualties have been reported and there is, for now, no danger to the population. The investigation has been taken over by the criminal police of Brandenburg.
50Hertz, the network operator, conveyed that the perpetrators would have caused damage to several power lines. There was a brief interruption in supply, but the lines were quickly restored to operation, and the overall electricity supply was not affected.
At the beginning of the year, tens of thousands of homes in Berlin were left without electricity after the deliberate burning of a cable bridge over the Teltow canal, in one of the most serious incidents of this kind in the German capital in recent years.
A far-left extremist group has claimed responsibility for the major power outage caused.
According to the authorities, the group sent a letter to the regional police as early as Saturday, in which they describe the incident as “a successful diversion” and “an act of self-defense and international solidarity with all those who defend the Earth and life”. The document was analyzed by the security department of the Criminal Police Office of the state of Berlin, which concluded that the message is authentic.
