Most Americans, including Republican voters, support arming Ukraine against Russia, back NATO, and favor a strong global role for the US, a new poll shows — views that contrast with President Donald Trump’s new security doctrine. The results of the Reagan National Defense Survey show that 62% of American citizens want Ukraine to defeat Russia, with the majority of Republicans and Democrats lining up behind Kiev, reports TVPWorld.
Support for sending arms to Ukraine has risen to 64%, nine percentage points more than last year. The poll was published on Thursday, the same day the White House presented a new National Security Strategy, which envisages a dramatic reorientation of US priorities.
Contrasting views The 33-page document delivered a stinging critique of Europe, long considered America’s closest partner, and called for the restoration of “strategic stability” with Russia, while avoiding any mention of Moscow’s aggression.
However, the Reagan National Defense Survey shows that most Americans view Moscow with suspicion, with 70% of respondents saying they do not believe Russia will respect a peace agreement with Ukraine — including 61% of Republicans and 77% of Democrats.
