The warlike appetite of the Kremlin’s leader, Vladimir Putin, seems to have reached dizzying new heights, this time threatening stability beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. Space security experts warn that a conflict in orbit is no longer a science fiction scenario, but a very real threat, fueled by the fact that Moscow, in clear technological decline, has very little to lose.
Victoria Sampson, director of security and space stability at the Secure World Foundation, explained that there are alarming intelligence reports suggesting that Russia is developing a nuclear device intended for placement on a satellite. Such technology would function as a rudimentary anti-satellite weapon, but with a devastating effect: the detonation of a nuclear charge in the Earth’s low orbit could instantly destroy over 80% of active satellites, paralyzing the internet, mobile phone signals, and global GPS systems.
Moscow’s Hybrid Tactics: Orbital “Bullets” and Constant Jamming
Beyond the nuclear threat, Russia is already demonstrating its dangerous co-orbital maneuvering capabilities. Moscow can use its own satellites to intercept and harass other states’ networks. As they approach a target, Russian satellites can launch objects at high speed, acting as orbital firearms designed to destroy rival components.
Although a destructive physical attack is considered by experts to be an extreme scenario – of the “Putin in the bunker” type, applicable only in the case of a total ground war with a superpower like the USA – low-intensity hybrid aggressions are already a daily reality. Among the methods currently used by Moscow are: electronic jamming, by interfering with the data emissions of Western satellites, altering and replacing information transmitted by satellite, disrupting the GPS signal, a tactic intensely felt in the Baltic region, where civil aviation often faces navigation dysfunctions.
The major Western armies confirm the seriousness of the situation. General Paul Tedman, head of the British Space Command, revealed that Russia attempts to jam the United Kingdom’s military satellites on a weekly basis. Moreover, Berlin has accused the Kremlin of intercepting satellite communications of European armies, while an incident last spring alarmed London, after the GPS signal of an official RAF aircraft, on board of which was the British Secretary of Defence, John Healey, was completely neutralized.
Why is Russia more dangerous now?
Russia, once a dominant force in the space race, has significantly regressed. Its civil space program is plagued by corruption, severe quality control issues, and a stark lack of a private commercial sector. Currently, Moscow only has about 370 satellites in orbit, a paltry figure compared to the 11,000 devices of the United States or the 1,000 belonging to China.
Furthermore, considering that the International Space Station (ISS) is set to be decommissioned in the coming years, Russia will be left without an orbital research base. However, it is precisely this major asymmetry that makes Moscow extremely unpredictable. Having much less physical infrastructure to protect in space, Russian leaders believe that the impact of a potential counterattack on them would be minimal, turning vulnerability into an incentive for sabotage.
