Russian authorities are considering the possibility of implementing martial law following the State Duma elections in September, reports the independent publication “Verstka”, citing sources from the federal and regional administration, the Russian Parliament, and the Kremlin entourage.

According to sources, some representatives of the power structures argue that Russia should move towards a much larger mobilization of society for war.

According to Russian legislation, martial law can be instituted by presidential decree and allows for the imposition of movement restrictions, the introduction of a state of siege, the mobilization of the workforce for the defense industry, the confiscation of goods for military purposes, the suspension of elections, and the extension of censorship.

The publication’s sources state that a potential decision could be triggered by a major failure on the front or by a sharp decrease in the recruitment rate for the war in Ukraine.
