Russian authorities are said to have built an extensive digital surveillance system for students, which far exceeds the educational process. School platforms, video cameras, the internet in educational institutions, and social network monitoring are used to collect information about children, according to a report published by the “Memorial” Center.

According to researcher Konstantin Troitski, the author of the report, digital profiles of students can contain information about their studies, health, family, circle of friends, and even their opinions. Some of this data could become accessible to power structures, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, FSB, and Rosgvardia.

An important role falls to the teachers themselves. Class tutors would be obliged to check the students’ accounts and monitor their posts, comments, subscriptions, and likes. Information deemed problematic is forwarded to the school management and may subsequently reach the police.

The extent of monitoring is illustrated by the Sverdlovsk region. In March 2026, Deputy Governor Tatiana Savinova declared that the authorities are monitoring 4.6 million profiles on social networks. The system searches for prohibited content, signs of behavior considered “destructive” or messages of suicidal nature and sends alerts to educational authorities and schools.
