The administration of the State University of Saint Petersburg has sent students offers to enlist in the Russian army and serve in the Arctic, reports the publication “Bumaga”, citing recipients of the messages.
Young people are being recruited as drone operators by the 12th Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense, an entity responsible for maintaining, developing, and operating Russia’s nuclear arsenal.
For signing a contract presented as a “one-year” one, students are promised a one-time payment of 3.8 million rubles from the Ministry of Defense, as well as a scholarship of 50,000 rubles offered by the university.
The recruitment campaign takes place as Russia rapidly expands its military infrastructure in the Arctic. Following the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, Russian authorities have built new military bases in the Murmansk and Karelia regions, for which they have allocated over 42 billion rubles.
Also, following the Ukrainian operation “Spider Web”, Russia has strengthened security measures at the Olenia strategic aviation base and has begun active recruitment of drone operators for the units of the Northern Fleet.
