Millions of euros’ worth of food had to be thrown away after a cyberattack targeted refrigerators and freezers at retail chains across six European countries. Although no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which caused the temperature of goods in the refrigerators to soar as high as 50°C, suspicions have emerged that the incident was more than the work of reckless youngsters, with far more powerful actors potentially involved.
The incidents, which occurred simultaneously in all six countries, heightened existing concerns in European capitals about hybrid threats to infrastructure that have emerged since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“We don’t know who is behind the attack, and we may never find out,” said Katrien Eggers, a spokesperson for Belgium’s Centre for Cybersecurity, adding that she was concerned about the growing number of such incidents, driven in part by advances in artificial intelligence.
