On Monday, Iran warned Romania that it would respond politically and legally if the country allowed the United States to use bases on its territory for operations against it. The spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that Tehran urges nations not to get involved in war.
“If Romania makes its bases available to the United States, this would be equivalent to participating in a military aggression against Iran,” Baghaei said at a press conference.
According to the Iranian official, such action would be unacceptable from the perspective of international law and would entail responsibility for Romania.
Romania has allowed the deployment on its territory, for a maximum of 90 days, of several American refueling aircraft, monitoring equipment and satellite communication systems, as well as about 500 American soldiers, reports news.ro. The first aircraft have already landed at Otopeni.
Marius Lazurca, adviser to President Nicuşor Dan on national security issues, said that the United States of America did not ask Romania for a military base, but offers more security. “In my opinion, it is a mistake to start from the premise that Romania has become a target after the start of this conflict or that it has become even more of a target following the decision of the Romanian Parliament,” the official stated.
