Tens of thousands of Russians have decided to leave for Georgia, due to rumors of a possible new wave of mobilization this fall, reports Moscow Times on Wednesday. The Russian Federal Customs Service announced a “record flow of travelers” at the Verhnii Lars border crossing point.
According to the governmental organization, on August 15 and 16, over 19,000 people crossed the border into Georgia daily, and on August 18, their number exceeded 20,000. “The current figures are significantly higher than those recorded in similar periods in previous years,” stated the Federal Customs Service.
According to witnesses quoted by the “Ostorojno, novosti” channel, a large column of cars has formed on the Russian side of the border, and the vehicles are advancing at approximately 50 meters per hour.
Verhnii Lars is the only terrestrial crossing point of the border between Russia and Georgia. At the end of September 2022, it became the busiest border point in Russia, after the mobilization announced by Vladimir Putin led tens of thousands of Russians to leave the country and wait for several days in kilometer-long queues.
