Three regional allies have joined Poland in placing an order for several thousand Piorun air defense systems made in Poland – the largest contract of this kind in history. The order is worth 1.9 billion euros for thousands of Piorun air defense systems, reports TVPWorld.

Lithuania, Latvia, and Norway have joined Poland in this defense procurement initiative, which is anticipated to be funded through the EU’s SAFE program. The four NATO allies signed a framework agreement on Monday, which was praised by the Polish Minister of Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, as being “the largest contract for Piorun missiles in history.”

Over 80% of the rockets and launchers provided for in the agreement will be allocated to the Polish Armed Forces.

    What is Piorun?

Piorun is a shoulder-launched air defense system, manufactured in Poland, designed to destroy low-flying aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones. Its performance during the war in Ukraine has earned it international recognition, and the system is already in use by several countries, including the United States, Norway, Estonia, and Latvia.

After signing the agreement, Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the system is one of the main defense export products of Poland. Kosiniak-Kamysz previously emphasized the results obtained by this weapon on the battlefield, stating that the Piorun missiles “have proven their effectiveness in Ukraine.”
