British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that Russia influenced the 2016 vote at the Brexit referendum, while also warning voters in France and Germany about Moscow’s efforts to influence politics in their countries, reports Reuters.

Burnham, who became Prime Minister in July and said last month that the UK might consider rejoining the European Union, is the first British head of government to openly state that there is evidence of Russian interference in the referendum a decade ago.

“I asked the question when I arrived at Downing Street: was there interference in the 2016 referendum from Russia? And the clear answer I received was yes, there was,” Burnham stated in The Rest Is Politics podcast.

Burnham did not provide details regarding the evidence on which his claim was based.

The Russian embassy in London did not immediately respond to a request for comments regarding the statements of the British government’s head. Previously, Russia had rejected accusations of involvement in influencing the referendum vote, stating that Great Britain is gripped by anti-Russian hysteria.
