The USA and Denmark are negotiating the placement of military bases in Greenland, foreign press reports, citing sources familiar with the negotiations. It’s about three objectives, which could be inaugurated in the south of the island and declared “sovereign territory of the USA”.
President Trump declared in January that the USA should “own” Greenland to prevent Russia or China from taking it over, specifying that this could happen “the easy way” or “the hard way”.
On the territory of the bases, Russian and Chinese maritime activities are expected to be monitored in the strategic area located in the maritime corridor situated between Greenland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom.
The White House confirms that the administration is engaged in high-level discussions with Greenland and Denmark, but refuses to comment on the details of the negotiations, reports hotnews.ro. In turn, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that discussions are taking place with the USA, expressing its willingness for the establishment of additional bases.
The final number of bases could change, and one of the new facilities is expected to be located in Narsarsuaq, on the site of a former American military base that housed a small airport.
Analysts assert that any other new bases would likely be located on lands that already have infrastructure, such as airfields or ports, which could be modernized at a lower cost than building new facilities.
